NY Traffic Laws Regarding Right Turns, Left Turns & U-Turns
New York state laws regarding legal turn procedures are found in N.Y. VTL §§ 1160-1166. In general, the following basic regulations must be adhered to when making a turn.
Right turns:
- Drivers must always approach and make a right turn as close as practicable to the right-hand curb (N.Y. VTL §1160)
- At a signal, drivers turning right on a red must yield the right of way to oncoming traffic (although some intersections do not allow right turns on a red light)
- Signal lamps or hand signals must always be used not less than 100 feet before turning (N.Y. VTL §1163)
Left turns:
- At signal-controlled intersections, left turns must yield to oncoming traffic unless a green left-turn arrow is evident
- Left turns cannot be made if markers, signs, etc. prohibit traffic from moving in that direction (N.Y. VTL §1160(d))
- Signal lamps or hand signals must always be used not less than 100 feet before turning (N.Y. VTL §1163)
U-turns:
- U-turns shall be made from the furthermost left lane and into the furthermost left lane when permissible by law (N.Y. VTL §1160(e))
Examples of Improper Turns
Improper turns can occur in various ways, including:
- Illegal U-turns: Making a U-turn in areas where such maneuvers are prohibited, such as business districts, school zones, and areas with posted no U-turn signs.
- Failing to signal: Neglecting to use your turn signal when making a turn, which is essential for informing other drivers and pedestrians of your intended actions.
- Improper lane usage: Turning from the wrong lane, such as making a left turn from a lane designated for straight-ahead traffic only.
- Ignoring traffic signs and signals: Disregarding stop signs, yield signs, or red lights when making a turn.
- Unsafe turns: Making a turn without ensuring it is safe to do so, which can lead to collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists.
